How to Export Notes from NotesOnline.org to TXT, Markdown, or HTML

Updated

NotesOnline.org lets you export a single note as plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), or HTML (.html), and it also provides an Export All Notes option for backing up or migrating your entire collection. Because notes are saved in your browser, exporting is the recommended way to keep a durable copy outside the browser. The steps below cover both single-note and bulk export, plus what to check before you start.

Before You Export

  • Confirm the note is saved. The editor shows a status such as "Saved" or "Edited just now" near the word and character counts. If it still reads "Edited," give it a moment or make a small edit and undo it so autosave triggers.
  • Decide on the format. TXT keeps only the words; Markdown keeps headings and basic structure in a portable plain-text form; HTML keeps formatting and is best for viewing or pasting into web tools.
  • Know where files go. Exports download through your browser, so they land in your default Downloads folder unless your browser asks you where to save.

Export a Single Note

  1. Open the note you want to export in the editor.
  2. Open the File menu.
  3. Choose the format you need:
    • Save as TXT (also available as the Ctrl+S shortcut)
    • Save as Markdown
    • Save as HTML
  4. Confirm the download if your browser prompts you, then open the file to verify the content and formatting.

Expected result: one file containing the current note, named by the note's title, in the format you selected.

Which Format Should You Pick?

Format Keeps Best for Trade-off
TXT Text only Quick backups, pasting anywhere Loses headings, links, and formatting
Markdown Headings, lists, links, basic structure Moving into Markdown editors, wikis, or code repositories Some rich formatting may not carry over
HTML Formatting and layout Viewing in a browser, embedding in web pages Bulkier files; less convenient to edit as plain text

If you are unsure, export Markdown: it stays readable as plain text and preserves more structure than TXT.

Export All Notes at Once

  1. Open the File menu.
  2. Select Export All (labeled Export All Notes in the export panel).
  3. Save the downloaded file or files to a folder you will remember.

Use this before clearing browser data, switching browsers or devices, or moving to another note-taking tool. Since notes live in your browser, a bulk export is your main safety net.

Verify and Use Your Export

  • Open each exported file and check that headings, links, and line breaks survived, especially if you chose Markdown or HTML.
  • Store backups somewhere separate from the browser, such as a synced folder or external drive.
  • To migrate, import the Markdown or HTML file into your target tool and fix any formatting that did not translate.

Common Snags

  • The download does not appear. Check your browser's download settings and whether it blocked the file; allow downloads from the site and retry.
  • The export looks incomplete. Return to the editor and confirm the status reads "Saved" before exporting again.
  • Formatting is missing in TXT. That is expected—TXT is plain text. Re-export as Markdown or HTML if structure matters.
  • You exported from the wrong note. Switch to the correct tab first; single-note export applies to the note currently open.
