How to Make an Undertale Text Box and Export It as PNG, GIF, or MP4

Updated

Open the Undertale Text Box Generator, pick a preset or start from a blank box, choose a font and border, add a portrait, type your dialogue, preview the typewriter timing, then export as PNG for a still image, GIF for an animated typewriter effect, or MP4 with sound for video. The tool is described as a free online generator for Undertale and Deltarune-style dialogue boxes, with exports in PNG, GIF, and MP4 and shareable links.

Before you start

  • What you need: a browser, your dialogue text, and optionally a character portrait or sprite image.
  • What the tool gives you: pixel-style fonts, 12 border presets, character portraits, typewriter animation preview, and PNG / GIF / MP4 export.
  • Export formats by use: PNG for memes and still posts, GIF for looping typewriter dialogue, MP4 when you want video with sound.

Step 1: Choose a starting point

The generator offers quick presets so you don't have to build a box from scratch. Each preset sets a scene you can then tweak.

Preset What it sets up Good for
Classic Undertale Original box, Determination font Standard narration and dialogue
Sans Meme Comic Sans lowercase vibe Sans-style jokes and memes
Papyrus Dialogue Uppercase Papyrus energy Loud, all-caps character lines
Battle Text Fight-style yellow cue line Combat-style prompts
Choice Box Yes / No style prompt Decision moments
Animated GIF Ready for typewriter GIF export Looping animated dialogue
MP4 with Sound Clip-ready dialogue for MP4 Video clips with audio

There is also a Flowery Deltarune page that lets you start from a finished scene, and a Random Dialogue option if you want a starting point to edit.

Step 2: Set the font and border

Fonts

Match the font to the speaker. The tool lists three pixel-perfect options:

  • Determination Mono — classic narration.
  • Sans Comic Style — laid-back dialogue.
  • Papyrus Decorative — loud, decorative lines.

Borders

The border menu has 12 presets, grouped as official, AU, tribute, and custom styles:

  • Official: Original Box (Classic Undertale), Dark World (Deltarune).
  • AU: Underfell (dark and edgy), TS!Underswap (blue theme), Primus.
  • Tribute: Earthbound/Mother style, FNAStale (FNAF + Undertale crossover).
  • Custom: Octagonal (8-sided), Shaded Ground (shadow effects), Classic TuberTale, Surge!TuberTale, Derp (quirky cartoon).

If you change your mind, Reset to Default returns you to the Original Box.

Step 3: Add a portrait and write the dialogue

  1. Open the Dialogue text area and type your line.
  2. Use \color codes in the text to change the color of specific words — the tool's tip notes this directly.
  3. Add a character portrait or sprite from the sprite options, or use a custom frame/sprite if you're matching a specific AU.

Keep lines short. Undertale boxes are small — the default export size shown is 578 × 152 — so long paragraphs will crowd the box or get cut off in the preview.

Step 4: Preview the typewriter animation

Before exporting, play the preview to check pacing. The typewriter effect reveals text character by character, and the timing is what makes a box feel authentic. If the text appears too fast or too slow, adjust the text length or speed setting until the reveal looks right.

Step 5: Export in the right format

Format How it's exported Best for
PNG Quick Export button Still images, memes, posts
GIF Quick Export button Animated typewriter loops
MP4 Exported separately below, so video export can keep sound Video clips with audio

Two practical notes from the tool itself:

  • MP4 is a separate export step. Don't look for it in the same quick-export row as PNG and GIF — it lives below so the video can retain sound.
  • Copy Link creates a shareable link to your box, useful for collaboration or saving a draft.

Stacking multiple boxes

If your scene needs several boxes in sequence, use Add to Stack. The stack holds up to 30 boxes, and Export Stack exports them together. This is the fastest way to build a multi-line conversation without re-exporting one box at a time.

Common snags

  • Text overflows the box: shorten the line or split it across stacked boxes.
  • Animation feels off: re-check the preview after any text edit; changing length changes the reveal timing.
  • MP4 has no sound: confirm you used the separate MP4 export, not a GIF converted elsewhere.
  • Wrong vibe for the character: swap the font and border together — a Papyrus line in Comic Sans reads as a different character.
  • Lost your work: use Copy Link to save a shareable version before closing the tab.

Quick checklist

  1. Pick a preset or blank box.
  2. Choose font (Determination / Comic Sans / Papyrus) and border (official, AU, tribute, or custom).
  3. Add portrait, type dialogue, add \color codes if needed.
  4. Preview typewriter timing and adjust.
  5. Export PNG, GIF, or MP4 (separate step, keeps sound); use Add to Stack for multi-box scenes.
