How to Make and Host a Custom Jeopardy Game with Phone Buzzers
Updated
You can build and host a custom Jeopardy game on Buzzinga.io without installing anything or creating an account to start. Players join from their own phones and buzz in there, while the game handles buzzer lockouts, resets, and scoring automatically. This works for game nights, classrooms, training sessions, and events. The main limits to know up front: the free plan caps you at 3 players, and Pro is what unlocks unlimited players plus custom logos, images, audio, video, AI category generation, and CSV clue import.
Build the board
- Start a new game from the site. No account is required to begin; you can log in later if you already have one.
- Fill in each category title and its clues and correct responses. The board is built around the standard category-and-clue structure.
- Leave any columns you don't need blank. If you want fewer than 6 categories, just leave the category title and clues empty for the columns you're dropping — the board simply won't show them.
- If you're on Pro and have a lot of clues, use the CSV route instead of typing: open a board, select the settings (gear) icon to download the example template, fill it out, and re-upload it.
Get players onto their phones
Players join and buzz in directly from their phones or devices — no separate clickers or hardware. When someone taps to buzz, the game manages the buzzer lockout and resets for you, so you don't have to referee who was first or manually clear the buzzers between clues.
Player capacity depends on your plan:
| Plan | Players who can join |
|---|---|
| Free | Up to 3 |
| Pro | Unlimited |
For games with more than 10 participants, Buzzinga recommends using Teams so everyone stays involved while their points accumulate together.
Run the show and keep score
Scores update automatically as the game progresses. You can modify or undo any score with a single click, which is useful when a correction is needed mid-game.
As host, you can run everything from any device using remote host control. That means you can ditch the cables, keep the board clean for your audience, and see the correct responses at a glance. To see answers as host, log in to the same account you used to build the game.
Customize and scale up (Pro)
Pro adds the extras that matter for branded or repeatable events:
- Your own logo, images, audio, and video
- AI-generated categories
- Unlimited players
- CSV clue and response import
For organizations running repeatable training or multi-host events, Buzzinga Teams provides a centralized shared workspace, seat management, a private shared board library, role-based access, and organization branding.
Common snags to check
- Too many players can't join: you're likely on the free plan's 3-player cap. Upgrade to Pro for unlimited players, or use Teams for large groups.
- A category is missing: confirm you actually left that column's title and clues blank rather than half-filled.
- CSV import isn't working: it's a Pro feature — download the example template from the gear icon first, then re-upload your filled version.
- You can't see correct responses while hosting: log in to the same account you used to create the board.
If you want to try it before committing, you can create a game with no account and test the buzzer and scoring flow with up to 3 players, then decide whether Pro or Teams fits your event size.
