How to Make Pixel Font Text Boxes and Export Them as PNG, GIF, or MP4

Updated

You can make a pixel font text box in a browser with the Undertale Text Box Generator: pick a font preset (Determination Mono for narration, Sans Comic Style for casual lines, Papyrus Decorative for loud ones), choose a border and sprite, type your dialogue, then export as PNG, GIF, or MP4. The tool is built for Undertale and Deltarune-style dialogue boxes, so it suits fan content, memes, and roleplay rather than general graphic design.

What the tool gives you

The generator is a free online tool for creating Undertale-style dialogue boxes with pixel-perfect accuracy, per the site. Its core parts:

  • Typography system — pixel fonts including Determination Mono, Sans Comic Style, and Papyrus Decorative.
  • Border styles — 12 presets, including the official Original Box, Deltarune's Dark World frame, AU themes (Underfell, Underswap, Primus), tributes (Earthbound, FNAStale), and custom shapes like Octagonal and Shaded Ground.
  • Sprites and portraits — attach a character portrait or sprite to the box.
  • Typewriter animation — preview the text reveal timing before exporting.
  • Export formats — PNG, GIF, and MP4, plus share links and a box stacker that holds up to 30 boxes.

Step by step: build and export a box

  1. Start from a preset or a blank box. Quick presets include Classic Undertale, Sans Meme, Papyrus Dialogue, Battle Text, Choice Box, and Animated GIF. Starting from a preset sets font, border, and tone together, which avoids mismatched combinations.
  2. Pick the font that matches the voice. Determination Mono reads as classic narration; Sans Comic Style is lowercase and laid-back; Papyrus Decorative is uppercase and loud. If the text feels wrong for the character, change the font before anything else.
  3. Choose a border style. The default is Original Box (classic Undertale). Switch to Dark World for Deltarune, or an AU/tribute frame if you're making fan content in that style.
  4. Add a sprite or portrait if your scene needs a character.
  5. Type your dialogue. The editor supports \color codes to change text color, which is useful for colored emphasis lines.
  6. Preview the typewriter timing. The animation preview shows how the text reveals; adjust until the pacing feels right.
  7. Export in the format you need:
    • PNG for a still image — the default size shown is 578 × 152.
    • GIF for animated typewriter text.
    • MP4 for clip-ready dialogue with sound. MP4 is exported separately below the main export area so video export can keep audio.

You can also copy a share link or add the box to the stacker (up to 30) to export a set of boxes together.

Choosing an export format

Format Use it when Notes
PNG You need a single still frame for a meme, thumbnail, or post Fixed canvas size (578 × 152 in the default view)
GIF You want the typewriter reveal as a looping animation No sound
MP4 You need video with audio for a clip or edit Exported separately from PNG/GIF so sound is preserved

If you're unsure, export PNG first to check the layout, then switch to GIF or MP4 once the text and timing are final.

Common snags and fixes

  • Font doesn't match the character's tone. Reset to a quick preset (Classic Undertale, Sans Meme, Papyrus Dialogue) and rebuild from there rather than tweaking a mismatched setup.
  • Portrait missing or wrong. Check that a sprite is selected in the sprite control before exporting; a blank sprite slot exports a box without a character.
  • Animation looks off in the still export. PNG captures one frame, so typewriter timing only shows in GIF or MP4. Use those formats if the reveal matters.
  • MP4 not appearing with the other exports. It's intentional: MP4 is exported separately below the main export area so the video can keep sound. Look for the separate MP4 export control.
  • Wrong border for the scene. The border list mixes official, AU, tribute, and custom styles; confirm you're on Original Box for classic Undertale or Dark World for Deltarune before exporting.

Related tasks

The same workflow covers the specific variants: a Sans dialogue box (Sans Meme preset plus Comic Style font), a Deltarune text box (Dark World border), and a standard Undertale box (Original Box plus Determination Mono). In each case, the export choices are the same PNG, GIF, or MP4.
