How to Play PokéClicker and Whether You Need to Download It
Updated
PokéClicker is a browser-based game you can start playing directly at pokeclicker.com without downloading anything. The site also offers an optional desktop client, which the game describes as a way to "play offline & improve performance." So the short answer: downloading is optional, not required — but the client adds offline play, a performance boost, and one exclusive Pokémon.
Playing in the browser
The web version is the default way to play. When you load the site, you set up a trainer and jump straight into the main menu.
Getting started
- Open pokeclicker.com in your browser.
- Enter a Pokémon name and a Trainer name when prompted — these identify your save.
- You land on the Start Menu, which is the hub for everything else.
From the Start Menu you can reach the main systems of the game:
- Pokédex — track which Pokémon you've seen and caught
- Items — including Item Bag, Key Items, Evolution Items, Collectible Items, Vitamins, Consumables, Held Items, and more
- Gems
- Profile — where you set your name, shiny/shadow/gender display, text color, trainer sprite, and background
- Badge Case
- Save / Enter Code
- Settings
- Events, Statistics, Achievements, Log Book
- Damage Calculator
- Challenge Modes
- Changelog, FAQ, Credits, External Links, Report a bug
The core loop
The game is a clicker, so progress comes from clicking and from your Pokémon battling automatically. The interface shows a Pokémon List with levels and stats, a Catch Chance panel (with catch rate and progress like 0 / 10), and a Click Attack readout. You defeat Pokémon, build up currency, and use items to evolve and strengthen your team.
Do you need to download it?
No. The browser version is fully playable on its own. The download is presented as an enhancement, not a requirement.
What the desktop client adds
| Feature | Browser | Desktop client |
|---|---|---|
| Play without installing | Yes | No (requires download) |
| Offline play | Not mentioned | Yes |
| Performance improvement | Not mentioned | Yes |
| Exclusive Pokémon | Not mentioned | Yes — available when you reach the Sevii Islands |
The site states you can "play offline & improve performance by downloading our desktop client here," and notes you can "even find a Pokémon exclusive to the client when you reach the Sevii Islands." That last point is the main gameplay reason to install: if you want to complete the Pokédex, the client-exclusive Pokémon matters.
Moving a save between versions
The interface includes New Save, Import Save, and Save / Enter Code options. If you start in the browser and later install the client (or vice versa), the import/save tools are how you carry progress across — so you aren't locked into one version once you begin.
Things worth knowing before you start
- Dungeon Guides are in beta. You can hire a guide to run dungeons automatically — it opens chests, takes ladders, and starts boss battles. You pay an upfront, non-refundable cost for a set number of attempts, with a discount for buying more runs at once. Guides do not guarantee a clear and charge regardless of outcome, and each guide moves at its own speed with its own tile preferences. Treat this as an optional convenience, not a safe bet.
- Some battle systems can be toggled off. The interface shows states like "Battle Items are disabled" and "Z-Moves are disabled," so if something isn't working, check whether it's switched off in your current context.
- Achievements and tracking. There's an Achievement Tracker where you select an achievement to follow, plus a Log Book and Statistics page for monitoring progress.
Quick answer
Play PokéClicker in your browser at pokeclicker.com — no download needed. Install the desktop client only if you want offline play, better performance, or the client-exclusive Pokémon on the Sevii Islands. Either way, use the save/import tools if you switch between them.
