How to Play the Daily Glyph Puzzle at glyph.today
Updated
Glyph is a daily word puzzle where letters are stacked into overlapping visual shapes, and you decode the hidden word from those shapes. Words are 2–7 letters and must be dictionary-valid, and you get a limited number of decode attempts per puzzle. You play in a browser at glyph.today or through the iOS/Android apps, and you can share your result once you solve it.
The Core Loop
Each daily Glyph presents a set of letters rendered as stacked, overlapping glyphs rather than as plain text. Your job is to read the structure and work out the word it encodes.
- Open today's Glyph from the main screen.
- Study the overlapping shapes to identify which letters are present and how they combine.
- Type your guess using the on-screen Glyph Keyboard.
- Submit the decode. If it's correct, you get the "Solved 🎉" screen. If not, you spend one of your decode attempts and try again.
The word must be dictionary-valid, so a plausible-looking arrangement that isn't a real word won't be accepted.
Rules and Constraints
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Word length | 2–7 letters |
| Validity | Must be a dictionary word |
| Attempts | Limited per puzzle (the interface tracks "Decode Attempts") |
| Input | Glyph Keyboard on screen |
| Reset | New puzzle every day |
Because attempts are limited, it pays to narrow down the letters before committing to a guess rather than typing the first word that fits the shape.
Tools That Help You Solve
Decoder Key
If you're stuck, you can use a Decoder Key. Tapping a box reveals that letter, and the reveal is marked with a key icon in your share results. You get one Decoder Key per attempt, so using it costs you a clean solve.
Marking Off Letters
Long-press any key on the Glyph Keyboard to dim it — this crosses off letters you've ruled out. Long-press again to re-illuminate it if you change your mind. This is a manual way to narrow possibilities as you study the glyph's structure.
Golden Glyphs
A Golden Glyph is awarded when you solve on your first decode attempt. Using a Decoder Key or extra attempts means the solve won't count as golden.
Stats, Streaks, and Accounts
Your stats reflect your first attempt at each Glyph, so later retries don't inflate your record. The stats screen tracks:
- Win rate
- Golden Glyphs
- Highest rank
- Longest streak
Ranks progress over time — for example, "Next rank: Decoder in 3 days" appears under Novice.
Accounts are free, with no ads. The main reason to create one is that stats otherwise live only on the device you played on. Signing up transfers your existing stats automatically, but only from the device you sign up on — so create the account on the device you play most. An account also lets you start on your phone and finish on your laptop, and protects your streak across devices.
Sharing and Challenges
After solving, use Share result to post your outcome. The share output reflects your attempt data, including whether you used a Decoder Key.
You can also:
- Play Past Glyphs — revisit earlier puzzles.
- Create a Challenge — build your own Glyph and send it to a friend to crack.
- Challenge Mode / Create-a-Glyph — the same builder flow for custom puzzles.
Common Sticking Points
- Guessing too fast. With limited attempts, spend time reading the stacked shapes before typing.
- Forgetting the dictionary constraint. A shape can suggest a letter combination that isn't a valid word.
- Using the Decoder Key early. It's one per attempt, and it disqualifies the solve from being a Golden Glyph.
- Signing up on the wrong device. Stats transfer only from the device you create the account on.
- Assuming progress syncs without an account. Without one, your streak and history stay on that single device.
