How to Play Three Letters Game: Rules, Scoring, and Submission
Updated
Three Letters Game is a timed word-building game where each round gives you three letters. You must make words that start with the first letter and contain the second letter before the third letter appears. Press Enter/Return/Go to submit each word. You have three lives, and the clock keeps running.
The core word-building rule
The three letters are not just a pool to use in any order. They impose a sequence:
- The first letter must be the first letter of your word.
- The second letter must appear somewhere in the word.
- The third letter must appear after the second letter.
The site gives this example: with BDR, you could make BIDDERS — it starts with B, has D before R — but not BORDERING, because the R appears before the D.
What happens if you get the order wrong
If you enter an incorrect letter — for example, placing the third letter before the second one appears — the tile shakes and is highlighted in red. That is your signal to rearrange the word before submitting.
Step-by-step: playing a round
- Read the three letters for the round.
- Type a candidate word that satisfies the start-letter and letter-order rules.
- Watch the score preview. A valid word's potential score is shown in yellow; when the word is valid it pulses and is highlighted in green.
- Press Enter/Return/Go to submit. The instructions stress this: don't forget to press ENTER to submit the word.
- Keep going against the clock. Time is ticking, and you have three lives — presumably a lost life for failing to submit a valid word in a round.
Scoring: same letter values as Scrabble
Letters score as follows:
| Points | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U |
| 2 | D, G |
| 3 | B, C, M, P |
| 4 | F, H, V, W, Y |
| 5 | K |
| 8 | J, X |
| 10 | Q, Z |
The dictionary used is also like Scrabble's.
Bonus squares
The board includes multiplier squares:
- Light blue — double letter score
- Dark blue — triple letter score
- Pink — double word score
- Red — triple word score
The 15-letter bonus
If you make a word that is 15 letters long, you receive a 50-point bonus.
Blank tiles
A blank tile can stand for any letter you want, but it scores no points. Its position still matters:
- If the first of the three tiles is blank, that blank is the first letter of your word.
- If the second tile is blank, it is the second letter of your word.
- If the third tile is blank, it is the letter after the position of the second tile in your word.
Pause and help buttons
- Pause halts play, but only at the end of the current round — you must still submit a word or lose a life. Press the button again to restart.
- Help lets you reread the instructions at any time, but the game timer does not stop while you do.
End of game and sharing
At the end, you see your score, the round you reached, and your best word score, ranked out of five bananas. You'll also see emojis for the bonuses you earned in chronological order, and a note if you set a new personal best. The game offers ways to share your score and answers.
Everyone gets the same "Today's Letters" for the first game each day, so you can share and compare scores with others.
Quick tips for your first games
- Before typing, scan for a word that starts with letter one and mentally place letters two and three in order.
- Use the yellow score preview to test candidates cheaply — you don't need to submit to see whether a word is valid.
- Save long-word attempts for when the letters allow it; the 15-letter bonus is worth chasing only if the board multipliers support it.
- Remember blanks score zero, so a blank-heavy round is about survival, not high scores.
