What are the system requirements for IW4x?

Updated

IW4x lists separate baselines for the two sides of the game: the client you play on and the server you host. For playing, the published baseline is an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB of memory, a 256 MB GeForce 6600GT or Radeon 1600XT, 12 GB of available storage, and a broadband internet connection. If you want to run a dedicated server, the requirements are different and lighter on graphics: a 2-core processor, roughly 500 MB of memory per server, and at least 5 to 10 megabits per second of upload bandwidth. Graphics are not required for the server side, but you may need port forwarding or firewall access.

Client requirements (playing IW4x)

These are the numbers published on iw4x.io for the client:

Requirement Baseline
Processor Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Memory 1 GB
Graphics 256 MB GeForce 6600GT or Radeon 1600XT
Storage 12 GB available space
Connection Broadband internet

This applies to both IW4x and IW4x (mm), since they are two versions of the same multiplayer client for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). The difference between them is how you find games, not what hardware they need: IW4x is built around community-hosted dedicated servers, while IW4x (mm) is built around matchmaking with friends and parties inside the client.

The 12 GB storage figure is worth planning around. It is the space the client needs available, so if your drive is nearly full, clear room before installing rather than during it.

Server requirements (hosting)

If you plan to host rather than just play, the published server baseline is:

Requirement Baseline
Processor 2 cores
Memory About 500 MB per server
Upload At least 5 to 10 megabits per second
Graphics Not required
Network Port forwarding or firewall access

Two details matter here. First, memory scales per server — about 500 MB each — so running several servers on one machine multiplies that figure. Second, the upload requirement is about how many players you can serve smoothly, not just whether the server starts. A connection below 5 Mbps upload is the most likely bottleneck if players report lag or failed connections.

Port forwarding or firewall access is a configuration step, not a hardware one. If your server starts but nobody can connect, this is the first thing to check.

How to use these numbers

  1. Playing only: compare your PC against the client table. If you meet the processor, memory, graphics, and storage lines and have broadband, you are within the published baseline.
  2. Hosting for friends: check the server table instead. Graphics do not matter, but core count, per-server memory, and upload speed do.
  3. Hosting publicly: treat the 5–10 Mbps upload figure as a floor, and confirm port forwarding or firewall access before inviting players.
  4. Both: you need to satisfy the client baseline on the machine you play from and the server baseline on the machine you host from — they can be the same machine, but the storage and memory demands add up.

Common sticking points

  • Meeting the client spec but not the server spec. A PC that plays fine may not be a good host if its upload is low or it has fewer than 2 cores available.
  • Forgetting the per-server memory multiplier. 500 MB is per server, not for all of them combined.
  • Skipping network configuration. Port forwarding or firewall access is listed alongside the hardware requirements for a reason; without it, a correctly specced server can still be unreachable.
  • Assuming graphics matter for hosting. They do not — the server baseline lists graphics as not required.

Where to go next

The requirements above come from the System requirements section of iw4x.io. The same site hosts downloads, documentation, a Discord community, and a public GitHub repository where development happens, plus a release archive of earlier client builds kept for reference. If you are still deciding between the two clients, the choice comes down to how you want to play: community-hosted dedicated servers on IW4x, or matchmaking with a friends list and parties on IW4x (mm). You can play with friends on either one.
