What Is Airwindows?
Updated
Airwindows is a website for human-made, bespoke digital audio plugins, created by Chris and released as free and open source software under the MIT license, with support through Patreon. It is aimed at music producers, mixing and mastering engineers, and audio developers who want unusual, hand-built processing tools rather than commercial plugin suites. The site itself is a running feed of release notes, download links, and technical commentary, so the practical way to use it is to read the latest post and follow the linked repositories.
What the site actually publishes
The homepage is a blog-style stream of posts. Each entry typically announces a plugin or an update, explains how to install it, and links to the download location. The excerpt available here covers ConsoleX3, Ultralight2, Ultralight, and FastDistance, which shows the range: console-style saturation, lightweight utility processing, and distance/space effects.
The posts are written in Chris's own voice and include implementation notes, for example that the "More" overdrive control in ConsoleX3 is the "Weave" algorithm, and that a console algorithm uses a "derivative BIP" approach developed after an attempt to recreate Signalsmith's "elliptic BLEP" antialiasing.
Licensing and support
- License: MIT, free and open source.
- Funding: Patreon, mentioned directly in the post.
- Implication: you can use, modify, and redistribute the plugins under MIT terms, and Patreon is the stated support channel rather than a paid tier described on the page.
The page does not state prices, account requirements, or paid tiers, so no conclusion can be drawn about whether any part of the offering is paid or requires login.
Plugin formats and installation
The ConsoleX3 post gives concrete installation details that also illustrate how Airwindows releases are structured:
| Item | Detail from the post |
|---|---|
| GUI version | Download from the GitHub releases page, click the top version number (0.0.7 at posting time) |
| No-GUI standalone | ConsoleX3NoGUI.zip (882k), standalone AU and VST2, including Raspberry Pi |
| Surround | Must use the Audio Unit ConsoleX3Mono plugin, which runs any number of channels but does not do surround panning |
| GUI customization | AirwindowsGlobals.zip (158k): text file, folder structure, and JPEG |
| Globals location | Put the Airwindows folder in your Documents folder, so it resolves to Documents/Airwindows/AirwindowsGlobals.txt with GreyWatercolor.jpg beside it |
| Consolidated collection | ConsoleX3 is excluded because it has too many controls |
Two installation warnings are worth repeating because they cause real failures:
- If you want the GUI version, do not install the Audio Unit from the no-GUI package, because the GUI installer will not proceed if a plugin of that name is already present.
- If JUCE looks for documents files somewhere other than the expected location on your system, put the Airwindows folder there instead.
How to follow new releases
The post names upcoming plugins that exist in the demo or are built into ConsoleX3 but are not yet standalone: Rockstar2, BezEQ4, and Weave. Standalone plugins are added to the existing standalone collections, with ConsoleX3 as the stated exception.
A practical workflow:
- Open the latest post on airwindows.com and note the plugin name and version.
- Follow the linked GitHub releases page and click the top version number.
- Choose the GUI or no-GUI package depending on whether you want the interface or a lightweight build.
- If you want custom GUI appearance, install
AirwindowsGlobalsinto your Documents folder as described. - Check the standalone collections for other plugins, remembering that ConsoleX3 is not included there.
Who it suits
Airwindows fits you if you want free, MIT-licensed, idiosyncratic audio tools and are comfortable reading release notes and installing from GitHub. It is less suited if you need a polished installer, formal support, or a single consolidated bundle containing every plugin, since the page explicitly notes that ConsoleX3 is left out of Consolidated and that GUI and no-GUI installs can conflict.
