What is BlueMap and what does it do for Minecraft worlds?

Updated

BlueMap is a Minecraft mapping tool that reads your world files and generates 3D models of the entire surface, which you then view in a browser. It is not just a flat top-down map: the output is a 3D representation you can explore as if you were in-game, or zoom out from for an overview. It works as a Spigot/Paper or Sponge plugin, a Fabric or Forge mod, or as a standalone command-line tool with no server at all.

What BlueMap actually produces

BlueMap reads your existing Minecraft world files. From them it generates:

  • A map of the world
  • 3D models of the whole surface

Those results are served through a web app, so anyone with access to the viewer can look at the world in a browser. The intended experience is close to viewing the world as if you were in-game, with the option to pull back for a wide overview instead.

How it fits into a server

If you install BlueMap as a plugin or mod, it renders asynchronously to your Minecraft server thread. In practice this means rendering does not directly block the server thread, so as long as your CPU is not fully utilized, the server should not be slowed down while BlueMap renders.

That asynchronous behavior is the main practical difference from tools that pause or compete with normal server work. It also means the resource to watch is CPU headroom rather than the render process itself.

Ways to run it

Setup Form Notes
Spigot/Paper server Plugin Renders asynchronously to the server thread
Sponge server Plugin Same asynchronous rendering behavior
Fabric Mod For Fabric-based setups
Forge Mod For Forge-based setups
No server Standalone command-line tool Use BlueMap without any server

The standalone option matters if you only want to map existing world files and do not run a live server.

Getting started

  1. Download BlueMap from the official site.
  2. Follow the installation instructions for your chosen form (plugin, mod, or standalone).
  3. Point it at your world files and let it render.
  4. Open the web viewer to browse the generated 3D map.

There is also a demo map available on the site if you want to see the viewer before installing anything, plus a list of addons and tools that work with BlueMap.
