What Is Glyph (glyph.today)? A Daily Word Puzzle You Decode From Shapes
Updated
Glyph is a daily word puzzle at glyph.today where letters are stacked into overlapping visual shapes, and your job is to decode the hidden word from those shapes. Each puzzle uses a word of 2–7 letters that must be dictionary-valid, a new Glyph appears every day, and you can play in a browser or through the iOS and Android apps. It suits anyone who likes short, once-a-day word challenges with a visual twist rather than a crossword grid or letter-guessing format.
How a Glyph Puzzle Works
Instead of reading letters in a row, you study how letterforms overlap and combine into a single glyph. The word is hidden inside that structure, and you decode it by working out which letters the shapes represent.
The core loop:
- Open today's Glyph.
- Study the overlapping shapes to identify candidate letters.
- Enter a word of 2–7 letters that is dictionary-valid.
- Submit your decode attempt.
You get a limited number of decode attempts, and the puzzle tracks which letters you've decoded and found as you go.
The Glyph Alphabet
The site includes a Glyph Alphabet reference. This is the key to the whole puzzle: it maps the visual letterforms used in the glyphs, so you can translate shapes back into letters. If a shape isn't clicking, checking the alphabet is the intended way to learn the visual language rather than guessing blindly.
Decoder Keys
If you're stuck, you can use a Decoder Key. Tapping a box reveals that letter, and it's marked with a key icon in your share results. You get one Decoder Key per attempt, so it's a limited assist rather than an unlimited hint system.
Marking Off Letters
A newer feature lets you mark off letters yourself. Long-press any key to dim it (crossing off letters you've ruled out), and long-press again to re-illuminate it. This is a scratchpad for narrowing possibilities as you study the glyph's structure.
Daily Play, Stats, and Streaks
Glyph is built around a daily habit:
- Daily Glyph — one new puzzle each day.
- Streak — tracked as consecutive days solved (for example, "0 days" when starting).
- Win Rate — percentage of puzzles solved, based on your first attempt at each Glyph.
- Golden Glyphs — awarded when you solve a Glyph on your first decode attempt.
- Rank — you progress through ranks, starting at 🔰 Novice, with the next rank shown (for example, "Decoder in 3 days").
- Guild standings — a leaderboard-style view.
Stats reflect your first attempt at each Glyph, so re-solving later doesn't inflate your record.
Accounts: What You Get and the One Catch
Accounts are described on the site as free, no ads, no catch. Signing up gives you:
| Benefit | What it means |
|---|---|
| Keep stats forever | Streak, win rate, and history persist across devices |
| Play on any device | Start on phone, finish on laptop — progress follows you |
| Never lose your streak | Stats are no longer tied to a single device |
The important condition: sign up on the device you play on most. Your existing stats transfer automatically at sign-up, but only from that device. If you create the account elsewhere, the local stats on your main device won't come along.
You can also edit your username and pick an emoji icon, or delete your account, from the account panel.
Beyond the Daily Puzzle
- Play Past Glyphs — go back and solve previous days' puzzles.
- Challenge Mode / Create-a-Glyph — build your own Glyph and challenge a friend to crack it.
- Sharing — share your result or your stats, including the key-icon marker if you used a Decoder Key.

Who It's For
Glyph fits if you want a quick daily word challenge that rewards visual pattern recognition, you like the ritual of streaks and ranks, and you'd rather decode a single hidden word than fill a grid. It's less suited if you want long sessions, multiplayer competition in real time, or a puzzle with no daily reset. The 2–7 letter, dictionary-valid constraint keeps each puzzle short and self-contained.
