What Is MiniMessage and Where Is It Used?
Updated
MiniMessage is a compact, human-readable text format from the Adventure library for representing rich text. In Minecraft, it is used by plugins and mods to format text in chat messages, item lore, holograms, and server list entries. You write tags inline with your text instead of building complex JSON, and the Adventure library renders the result. For deeper reference, the official MiniMessage documentation is the place to look; the MiniMessage Viewer (also called Adventure WebUI) is a browser-based editor for writing and previewing it.
How MiniMessage fits into Minecraft text
Minecraft servers and plugins need styled text: colors, bold or italic spans, clickable links, hover tooltips. MiniMessage expresses all of that in a single readable string, which makes it easier to write by hand and easier to review in config files than nested JSON components.
The format is tied to the Adventure library, so anywhere a plugin or mod uses Adventure for text, MiniMessage strings are typically accepted. That covers the four common display contexts:
| Context | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Chat | Messages sent in the chat window |
| Lore | The description text on items |
| Hologram | Floating text displayed in the world |
| Server list | The MOTD shown in the multiplayer server list |
Where you will encounter it
- Plugin and mod configuration files — message templates, prefixes, menu titles, and item descriptions are often stored as MiniMessage strings.
- In-game previews — the Viewer can copy a Minecraft server address to your clipboard so you can add it to your server list and see the formatted text in-game.
- Sharing and reuse — the Viewer can produce a short link or full link to your text, and export it to JSON for pasting into a plugin or mod. Short links expire after 6 months, so keep the full link if you need it longer.
Why use a viewer instead of writing blind
MiniMessage is readable, but mistakes in tag syntax or nesting are easy to miss until the text appears in-game. A viewer gives you immediate feedback: you enter text in the input box, choose the preview format (chat, lore, hologram, or server list) with the buttons at the top, and the output appears below the input. Formatting buttons above the input handle bold, italic, underline, clickable URLs, commands, and hover text, so you do not have to remember every tag by hand.
For example, if you are writing a server list MOTD with a colored title and a hover tooltip, you can build it in the Viewer, switch to the server list preview, and confirm the layout before copying the string into your config.
Getting started
- Open the MiniMessage Viewer in your browser.
- Type or paste your text into the input box in the middle of the screen.
- Use the top buttons to pick the preview format and apply formatting.
- Check the output below the input.
- Share via short or full link, or click "Export to JSON" to get a JSON representation for your plugin or mod.
If you want an in-game check, use the "Try in-game" button to copy a server address and add it to your Minecraft server list. Note that the Viewer is not official Minecraft software.
