What is Stefans Tools (tools.stefankueng.com)?

Updated

Stefans Tools is a personal collection site for free open-source Windows utilities by developer Stefan Küng. It lists each tool with a one-line description, current version, release date, and Info/Download links. The site is useful if you want a small, focused set of Windows utilities from a single developer, but you should check the maintenance status of each tool before relying on it: the page separates actively maintained apps from ones marked as no longer actively supported.

What you'll find on the site

The homepage presents tools in two groups, each as a table with the columns Tool, Description, Version, and Links (Info / Download). The header describes the collection as "Useful open source tools that make your life easier."

Tools no longer actively supported

The page keeps a second table for apps that "might still be useful" but are no longer actively supported:

  • AAClr (1.0.2, 2013) — changed Aero colors to match the wallpaper; the page notes this is only useful on Windows 7, since later Windows versions do this natively.
  • EvImSync (1.0.0, 2010) — synced Evernote notes with Gmail in both directions.
  • FavIconizer (1.4, 2012) — persisted favorite icons in Internet Explorer.
  • MailNoter (1.0.1, 2009) — captured web content and emailed it.
  • TrafficWatcher (2.0.1, 2009) — monitored network traffic.

How to use the site to pick a tool

  1. Scan the description column for the task you need (text editing, regex search, file timestamps, Explorer tweaks, encryption-aware sync).
  2. Check the version date. A recent date suggests the tool is still being updated; an old date in the first table still means it's listed as current, but expect less recent work.
  3. Open the Info link for details before downloading, then use Download to get the installer or archive.
  4. Treat the second table as legacy. For example, if you need wallpaper-matched window colors, use the built-in Windows setting rather than AAClr, as the page itself indicates.

Who runs it and where the code lives

The site is by Stefan Küng and links to his GitHub for source code. A donation option is offered on the page. The footer shows the site's last-updated timestamp, which is a quick way to judge how fresh the listing is.

Things to keep in mind

  • The page does not state licensing terms per tool beyond calling them open source; check each tool's Info page or GitHub repository if license matters for your use.
  • No pricing is mentioned on the page, but that alone doesn't confirm terms for every tool — verify on the individual Info/Download pages.
  • Several tools are Windows-specific (Explorer add-ons, Windows messages, Aero colors), so they won't apply on other platforms.
