What is The Music Lab?

Updated

The Music Lab (themusiclab.org) is a citizen science platform where anyone can play short online games that contribute to scientific research on how the human mind creates and perceives music. It's run as a research project, not a commercial product, and it's open to participants worldwide. If you want to take part in music cognition research without leaving your browser, this is what you'd use.

What you actually do there

You pick a game and play it. Each game is a short, self-contained listening or perception task, and your responses feed into the lab's research. The site recommends wearing headphones, though you can also play through speakers.

Games are grouped by theme, and each listing shows an average completion time and a running count of how many people have played. That count is useful context: it tells you how established a given task is.

If you want to participate with a baby

The site is actively recruiting expecting parents and parents with babies for research on infants and music. You can take part from anywhere in the world. This is a separate track from the general games, so if that's your interest, look for the baby-participation section rather than the standard game list.

How to choose your first game

  • Short on time: Tone-Deafness Test (2.5 min) or Top of the Charts (2.2 min).
  • Want the most-established task: Test Your Musical IQ has by far the largest participant base (over 3 million).
  • Curious about a newer study: Tone Twist is the most recently added and has the fewest players so far.
  • Desktop-only consideration: Kids' Music Quiz! works best on a desktop computer.

Practical notes

  • Headphones are recommended but not required.
  • The site invites feedback on your experience after playing.
  • Completion times are averages, so budget a little more if you play carefully.
  • No account or payment is mentioned in the available site information; treat any access requirements as unconfirmed until you visit.
