What Is Three Letters Game?
Updated
Three Letters Game (threelettersgame.com) is a browser-based word game where each round hands you three letters and a clock. You build words that start with the first letter and contain the second letter before the third one appears. Scoring and the dictionary follow Scrabble-style rules, you get three lives, and everyone plays the same "Today's Letters" in the first game of each day so scores can be compared.
How a Round Works
The rule is positional, not just "use all three letters." Take the example letters BDR from the site's own instructions:
- The word must start with the first letter (B).
- The second letter (D) must appear before the third letter (R).
- So BIDDERS is valid, but BORDERING is not, because the R shows up before the D.
Type your word, watch for the green highlight and pulse that confirm it is valid, then press Enter/Return/Go to submit. The timer keeps running while you play, and you have three lives — presumably one is lost when you fail to submit a word in time.
Blank Tiles
A blank tile can stand for any letter you choose, but it scores zero points. Its position still matters:
| Blank position | What it represents |
|---|---|
| First tile | The first letter of your word |
| Second tile | The second letter of your word |
| Third tile | The letter that comes after the second tile's position in your word |
Scoring
Letter values are the familiar Scrabble set:
| Letters | Points |
|---|---|
| A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U | 1 |
| D, G | 2 |
| B, C, M, P | 3 |
| F, H, V, W, Y | 4 |
| K | 5 |
| J, X | 8 |
| Q, Z | 10 |
A valid word's potential score appears in yellow before you submit. Bonus squares on the board multiply your score: light blue is double letter, dark blue is triple letter, pink is double word, and red is triple word. There is also a 50-point bonus for any 15-letter word.
Daily Play and Sharing
The first game each day uses "Today's Letters," which are the same for every player — the point is to share and compare scores. The site offers a variety of ways to share your score and answers from whatever device you are playing on. The interface is available in English and French.
Pausing, Help, and Game Over
- Pause stops play only at the end of the current round, so you still need to submit a word or lose a life. Press the button again to restart.
- Help lets you reread the instructions at any time, but the game timer does not stop while you do.
- Game Over shows your score, the round you reached, and your best word score, ranked out of five bananas. You also see emojis for the bonuses you earned in chronological order, and a note if you set a new personal best.
Who It Suits
If you like Scrabble-style scoring and quick, constrained word-building, the three-letter positional rule adds a puzzle layer that plain anagram games lack — you are not just finding words, you are sequencing letters correctly under time pressure. The daily shared letters give it a lightweight social hook for comparing results with friends. The site lists PayPal among its payment platforms, but the game itself is presented as a playable browser game; check the site directly for any current access or account details before assuming how play is offered.
