What Is TickerRisk and What Does It Do?

Updated

TickerRisk is a hidden-risk scanner for options traders, built to surface the catalysts that can move a stock before you sell premium. You enter a ticker and an option expiry window, and it returns a 0–100 risk score plus a catalyst timeline covering earnings, legal, clinical, SEC, and implied volatility (IV) signals. It scans across the full S&P 500. It is free to start, with a Pro tier that unlocks all tickers, multi-sector scanning, and the full S&P 500.

Who it's for

TickerRisk is aimed at options sellers — particularly premium sellers such as put sellers and wheel strategies — who need to know what could move a stock against their position. The core premise from the site: "Know the risk before you sell options."

If you only trade shares or buy options, the risk score is less directly useful, though the catalyst timeline still tells you what's coming.

What it scans

The tool aggregates data from public sources (SEC filings, news, ClinicalTrials.gov, court records) and third-party providers, then scores it. Signals include:

  • Earnings dates — next earnings and whether it falls inside your expiry window
  • Legal filings — court records and legal catalysts
  • Clinical trials — FDA and clinical catalysts
  • SEC alerts — regulatory filings
  • IV signals — implied volatility, IV rank, IV skew, and term structure
  • Options signals — unusual volume, delta, theta, vega
  • Company health — beta, P/E, market cap, revenue growth, margins, debt/equity, and more

How the workflow runs

  1. Enter a ticker — type a symbol and pick your option expiry window (weeks ahead).
  2. See the hidden catalysts — earnings, legal, FDA, SEC, and IV signals scored 0–100.
  3. Trade with confidence — know what could move the stock before you sell premium.

You can scan a single ticker for a full report, or enter several comma-separated tickers for a quick comparison table. A watchlist lets you batch scan saved tickers.

Key features

Feature What it does
Risk Score (0–100) Measures volatility risk — both bullish and bearish catalysts increase uncertainty
Catalyst Timeline Shows news, clinical, legal, SEC, FDA, and earnings events relative to today and your expiry
Sector Peers Click a peer to compare side-by-side
Market Scanner 500+ tickers across every S&P 500 sector, ranked by risk level
Market Pulse S&P 500 snapshot: top gainers, high IV rank, earnings soon, conservative wheel candidates
Watchlist Add tickers after scanning and batch scan them

Lookback and lookforward windows

Two fixed windows define what the score considers:

  • Lookback is fixed at 45 days — past catalysts within this window feed the score.
  • Legal & clinical lookforward is max(1 year, expiry weeks) — forward-looking legal and clinical events are considered up to whichever is longer.

This matters because a legal or clinical catalyst far outside your expiry can still be flagged, while earnings and IV signals are weighted against your specific expiry window.

Free vs. Pro

The site says it is "free to start." A Pricing page exists, and the Market Scanner notes that "Pro unlocks all tickers + multi-sector scanning & full S&P 500." So the free tier appears to cover a limited set of tickers and single-sector scanning, while Pro expands coverage. Exact pricing and tier limits are not specified in the available material — check the Pricing page for current terms.

What to keep in mind

The site's own disclaimer states that not all information may be publicly available, complete, or current, and that some signals are derived. Treat the risk score as a screening input, not a verdict — confirm catalysts and pricing in your broker before entering a trade. The tool also explicitly notes its wheel candidates are examples, not advice.
