What Kind of Game Is OpenFront?

Updated

OpenFront is an open-source, browser-based real-time strategy game where you expand a nation, manage gold, and fight for territory against bots and other players. You can play it in a browser or on Steam (it arrived there on September 17, 2026, per the v0.34.0 release notes). It suits players who want a fast, accessible RTS with short matches and a low barrier to entry, rather than a deep single-player campaign.

Core gameplay elements

The wiki organizes the game around a set of systems you'll interact with every match:

  • Nations — the entities you play as and compete against; the game includes AI-controlled "smarter nations" that were improved in recent updates.
  • Combat — the attack model was rebuilt in v0.34.0, and v35 brought back nukes that annex territory.
  • Gold — the in-game economy resource you manage to fund expansion and military action.
  • Bots — AI opponents you can play against, useful for learning the game.
  • Buildings — structures you construct, including a Port, which connects to naval units.
  • Naval and rail units — Warships, Transport Ships, and Trains extend your reach across water and land.

If you're new, the wiki's Early Game Guide covers the opening minutes: learning the basics and expanding early.

Game modes

OpenFront offers several ways to play, and the roster has grown through 2026:

Mode What it is
Free For All Standard multiplayer; a Ranked Free For All ladder was added in v35
Clan Wars Team-based clan competition; Ranked Clan Wars arrived in v35
Ranked 2v2 Matchmaking with its own leaderboard ladder, added in v0.33.0
Doomsday Clock A battle-royale zone mode introduced in v0.33.0

Lobbies now support more than 125 players, and v35 added twelve new maps, including Madagascar, Horn of Africa, New Zealand, and Benelux.

Progression and updates

The October 2026 v35 update was a progression-focused release: it added player levels, XP, and prestige up to the "Legend" rank, plus a subscriber XP boost. It also introduced a seekable replay viewer, faster quick chat with emoji, and improved AI nations.

Earlier releases show a steady cadence: v0.34.0 (September 2026) added Steam availability, public profiles, trusted-only lobbies, and player reporting; v0.33.0 (July 2026) added Doomsday Clock, Ranked 2v2, 22 new maps, impassable terrain, and account usernames.
