What VR Features and Locomotion Options Does Vivecraft Offer?
Updated
Vivecraft turns the PC Java edition of Minecraft into a VR experience built around motion controls and room-scale play. It supports Minecraft 1.7.10 and 1.10 through 1.20.1, and works best in roomscale with SteamVR-compatible hardware such as the HTC Vive or Cosmos, Valve Index, Oculus Rift S, and WMR headsets. It also runs on mobile VR devices like Quest, GearVR, PSVR, Daydream, Cardboard, and Vive Focus through SteamVR emulators. The mod is optimized for standing play with motion controllers, but seated play with mouse and keyboard is also supported.
Core VR Features
Full roomscale support
You walk around your physical room to move in the game. Minecraft blocks are 1 meter in size, so the scale of the world becomes physically apparent as you mine and build.
Motion-driven actions
Instead of pressing keys, you perform the action:
- Break blocks and fight by swinging your hands
- Shoot a bow by drawing and aiming two-handed
- Climb, swim, run, jump, sneak, eat, crawl, and row by actually doing the motion
- Context-sensitive interactions for doors, pistons, levers, animals, buckets, and more
World scaling
You can scale your size in the world up or down, letting you play as an ant or a giant.
Multiplayer motion visibility
In multiplayer, you and your friends can see each other's VR movements — including for 2D players. The Vivecraft NonVR Companion mod lets non-VR friends see your head and hand movements.
Streaming support
Vivecraft supports Mixed Reality and undistorted desktop mirroring, which is useful if you stream.
Locomotion Options
Vivecraft offers multiple locomotion styles so you can pick what fits your playstyle:
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Arc teleportation | Point and teleport, with optional limitations for a balanced survival experience |
| Free movement | Move in the direction you are pointing the controller or your head |
| Walkabout-style rotation | Uses 100% room-scale movement for turning |
| Seated play | Use WASD relative to your look direction |
| Climbey-inspired movement | Wall-scaling and leaping |
Mod Platform and Server Support
All standalone versions of Vivecraft include Optifine for performance and support shaders. The Forge modding platform is supported on most standalone versions. Starting with Minecraft 1.18, Vivecraft is available as a Fabric and Forge compatible mixin mod. Server plugins are available for Spigot and Forge to enhance VR multiplayer.
What You Need to Run It
Vivecraft requires the original PC Java edition of Minecraft. For headset-specific setup, the site points Quest and Quest 2 users to dedicated setup instructions. If you want the full roomscale experience, you'll get the most out of it with SteamVR-compatible hardware and motion controllers.
