Where Is t2i Lab Located and Who Is Part of the Team?

Updated

t2i Lab is a computer science and design research laboratory with two locations: Gothenburg, Sweden, and Bergen, Norway. The Swedish site sits in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers), while the Norwegian site is in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at The University of Bergen (UiB). The group was founded in 2004 by Morten Fjeld, who continues to lead it.

The two locations

Location University Department
Gothenburg, Sweden Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers) Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Bergen, Norway The University of Bergen (UiB) Department of Information Science and Media Studies

The two sites are not identical in emphasis. The Bergen lab focuses on the use of VR/AR in maritime activities and on interactivity in responsible media production and use. The lab as a whole describes its research as interaction design with emerging interactive technologies, including mobile computing, augmented reality, large displays, interactive surfaces, and robotics.

Who is part of the team

t2i describes itself as home to researchers with interests spanning engineering, design, and people. That mix matters if you are trying to work out whether your own background fits: the group is not limited to one discipline, and the site states that students of all levels are welcome to take part in its research projects and activities.

The team page is the place to see current members. The site's news items also name individuals connected to the lab, for example PhD student Yuchong Zhang (thesis defence, and a guest lecture visit to MediaFutures in Bergen) and Tomasz Kosinski (doctoral defence). These are dated news entries rather than a current roster, so treat them as examples of who has been active in the group, not as a complete list.

How to check current details

  1. Open the t2i site and go to the team page to see who is currently listed.
  2. Check the current projects page for what the lab is working on now, since research topics have expanded over time from tangible computing and interactive tabletops to areas such as VR/AR, mobile computing, data visualization, social robotics, and aerial drones.
  3. If you are a student considering joining, note that the lab explicitly welcomes students at all levels; the site's news section has previously announced open positions, so it is worth checking for postings.

One caveat: the site gives no information about funding, fees, or application deadlines, so those questions need to be directed to the relevant department at Chalmers or UiB rather than inferred from the lab pages.
