Picking the right tool
The choice mostly comes down to which computer you're developing for and whether you need character graphics, sprites, or both:
- Commodore 64, both graphics types → the $20 CharPad C64 Pro + SpritePad C64 Pro twin-pack is the combined option.
- Commodore 64, character graphics only → CharPad C64 Pro ($15).
- Commodore 64, sprites only → SpritePad C64 Pro ($15).
- Commodore 16 or Plus/4 → CharPad C16 Pro ($15), the newer tile-map editor for those machines.
- Just want to try the workflow → the free old CharPad C64 version or CharPad Glaze C64 for parallax effects.
Note that the free entries are older or single-purpose tools, not trial versions of the Pro software — the page lists them as separate items.
A bit of background
Subchrist Software's first project was Final TAP, a tool for digitally remastering software transferred from cassette tapes, which played a central role in efforts to preserve classic game tapes before magnetic degradation or "bit rot" destroyed them. SpritePad and CharPad followed as Windows tools for designing sprite images, animations, and game maps for 2D games, and they've been refined for over a decade. CharPad C16 Pro is the most recent addition, extending the toolset to the Commodore 16 and Plus/4.
