Which browsers does Just the Browser support, and how do I install it?
Updated
Just the Browser supports four desktop browsers: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Brave. You can install its configuration files either with an automated setup script (Windows via PowerShell, Mac/Linux via Terminal) or by following manual guides if you'd rather not run a script with administrator/root access. The project works by applying hidden settings that browsers normally reserve for companies and other organizations, stripping out AI features, telemetry reporting, sponsored content, product integrations, and other annoyances.
Supported browsers
| Browser | How to apply |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Setup script or manual guide |
| Microsoft Edge | Setup script or manual guide |
| Firefox | Setup script or manual guide |
| Brave | Setup script or manual guide |
The project provides configuration files for these browsers, documentation for installing and modifying them, and the installation scripts themselves. Everything is open-source on GitHub.
Installing with the setup script
The script installs the configuration files in a few clicks. It requires administrator (Windows) or root (Mac/Linux) privileges.
Windows
- Search for "Windows PowerShell" in the Start Menu.
- Right-click it and select "Run as administrator".
- Copy the command below, paste it into the window (Ctrl+V), and press Enter/Return:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/corbindavenport/just-the-browser/main/main.ps1")))
On older versions of Windows, you may need to run this command first to enable TLS 1.2:
[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol=[Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls12
Mac and Linux
- Search for Terminal in your applications list and open it.
- Copy the command below, paste it into the window (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V), and press Enter/Return:
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/corbindavenport/just-the-browser/main/main.sh)"
Expected result: the configuration files are installed for your browser(s), and the targeted features are removed the next time you use the browser.
Installing manually
If you don't like running scripts with administrator/root access, or the script doesn't work, use the manual guides instead. The project publishes separate guides for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Brave, so you can follow the steps for your specific browser and apply the configuration files yourself.
Common snags
- The script needs elevated privileges. If you're not comfortable with that, the manual guides are the intended alternative.
- Older Windows versions may fail on the download step until you run the TLS 1.2 command above.
- A known Windows bug can cause
CompatTelRunner.exeto run constantly when Just the Browser's uninstall shortcuts appear in the "Installed apps" section of Windows settings. The current installation script and registry files do not include those shortcuts, so a fresh install avoids the issue.
