Which Minecraft Versions Does MCEdit Support?

Updated

MCEdit 1.0 supports Minecraft Java Edition versions 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, and 1.11, plus Forge 1.7. Bedrock, Windows 10, Xbox, PS4, and Pocket editions are explicitly listed as not supported. If you play on any of those platforms, MCEdit cannot edit your world.

Supported and unsupported versions at a glance

This list comes from the MCEdit 1.0 download page on mcedit.net. It reflects the versions the tool was built and tested against, not a guarantee that later Java releases will work.

Why the version matters

MCEdit is a saved-game editor, not a mod that runs inside Minecraft. It reads the world save files Minecraft writes to disk, lets you modify blocks and terrain in a 3D view, and writes the result back. Because the save format and block definitions change between Minecraft releases, a version the editor doesn't recognize can produce broken or unreadable worlds. That is why the site ties each download to a specific supported range rather than claiming universal compatibility.

A practical example: if your world was created in Java 1.12 or later, it falls outside the listed 1.7–1.11 range. Before opening it, make a backup copy of the save folder, then test on the copy first. If the editor fails to load or save it correctly, you'll still have the original.

MCEdit 2 is a separate download

MCEdit 2 is a full rewrite of the tool, not an update to the 1.0 line. The site describes it as having entered Beta status in September 2016, with most vital features implemented, Mac OS X downloads available, and block knowledge updated for Minecraft 1.10. Plugin documentation is also provided for people extending it.

Treat the two as distinct products:

  • MCEdit 1.0 — the stable legacy editor, with the explicit Java 1.7–1.11 and Forge 1.7 support list above.
  • MCEdit 2 — a beta rewrite with its own feature set and its own version coverage, which you should confirm on its download page rather than assume matches 1.0.

How to check before you commit

  1. Note your exact Minecraft edition and version (Java vs. Bedrock, and the release number).
  2. Open the Download page on mcedit.net and read the version note attached to the specific build you intend to use.
  3. Back up your world save folder before the first edit.
  4. Test on the backup copy, then verify the world loads correctly in Minecraft afterward.

If your version isn't on the supported list, the safe conclusion is that MCEdit is not the right tool for that world — don't rely on a partial match.
