Why Does Loras (loras.dev) Require a Together AI API Key?

Updated

Loras asks for a Together AI API key because the site does not run its own image-generation models. According to the site, generation is "Powered by Together.ai, HuggingFace, & Flux," so the key is the credential that authorizes your image request against Together AI's backend. You need one to generate images; you do not need one to browse the LoRA styles or read the page. Note that loras.dev currently displays "We'll be back soon" and says the team is fixing the site, so the generator may not be usable until it returns.

What the key actually does

The Loras page is a front end: you pick a style, write a prompt, and the request is sent to Together AI's image models. Together AI requires an API key to accept that request, and Loras passes your key along instead of hiding a shared one behind the site. In practice this means:

  • Authorization: the key identifies the account making the generation call.
  • Billing and limits: usage is tied to your Together AI account, not to a Loras subscription. The site does not publish its own pricing, so any cost or quota comes from Together AI's terms.
  • No account on Loras: the page shows no sign-up flow, so the key is the only identity the generator needs.

The trade-off is that you must create a Together AI account before your first image. The benefit is that you are not handing a prompt to an anonymous queue with no visibility into the model provider.

How to get a key and use it

  1. Go to Together AI's site and create an account or sign in.
  2. Open the API keys section of your account and create a new key. Copy it immediately; most providers show the full key only once.
  3. Return to loras.dev, choose a LoRA style (the page lists Icons, Logos, Midjourney, Tarot Card, Long Toon, Colored Sketch, Pencil Sketch, and Anime Sketch).
  4. Enter your prompt in the "Describe your image" field. The page marks this field as optional, but a prompt is what steers the output.
  5. Paste the key into the "Together AI API Key" field and select Generate Image.
  6. Expect the styled image to appear in the page after the request completes. If nothing happens, check that the key was pasted without extra spaces and that your Together AI account is active.

Common snags

  • Site downtime: the "We'll be back soon" notice means the generator may be unavailable regardless of your key. The page points visitors to other demos such as BlinkShot.io in the meantime.
  • Key exposure: treat the key like a password. Anyone with it can spend against your Together AI account, so avoid pasting it into shared screens or saved public notes.
  • Style vs. prompt: the LoRA sets the visual style, while your prompt sets the subject. A strong style with a vague prompt still produces a vague image.
  • Optional prompt field: leaving it blank may still generate something, but you lose control over the content.

Is it worth setting up?

If you already use Together AI, the key requirement is a minor step and gives you a quick way to test several LoRA styles without installing anything. If you do not have a Together AI account, weigh that setup cost against simply using a generator that includes its own backend. Check the site's status first, since the generator is currently marked as under repair.
