Why Modern for Hacker News Only Works on Desktop or Laptop Computers
Updated
Modern for Hacker News is a browser extension, not a website or mobile app, so it only runs on desktop and laptop computers. The extension is built for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge on desktop operating systems. If you open modernhn.com on a phone or tablet, the site itself tells you to come back on a desktop or laptop — that message is expected behavior, not an error.
Why mobile and tablet can't run it
The extension works by injecting a redesigned interface into existing Hacker News pages after installation. That mechanism depends on a desktop browser that supports extensions.
- Mobile browsers generally don't support extensions. Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS don't allow installing extensions the way desktop Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do.
- The extension modifies existing HN pages. Per the site, once installed, Modern "will simply apply the new look and features to existing HN pages, without you having to do anything." There is no separate mobile version to fall back on.
- The site detects your device. Visiting modernhn.com from a phone or tablet returns the message asking you to return on a desktop or laptop computer.
So the limitation isn't a bug or a setting you can toggle — it follows from how browser extensions work.
What you need to use it
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Device | Desktop or laptop computer |
| Browsers | Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge |
| Cost | Free extension (optional Pro upgrade is $10) |
| Account | Not required to install |
If it doesn't appear after installing
If you're already on a desktop or laptop and the new look still isn't showing, check these in order:
- Confirm you're in the right browser. You must install the extension in the same browser you use to browse Hacker News. Installing it in Chrome won't affect Firefox.
- Check that the extension is installed and enabled. Open your browser's extensions page and verify Modern for Hacker News is present and switched on.
- Reload the HN page. The redesign is applied to existing HN pages, so a page loaded before installation may need a refresh.
- Switch back if needed. The site notes you can return to the old design with one click, so if the new look is active but you want the original, that option exists.
If you're on a phone or tablet, none of these steps will help — the extension can't run there at all. Use a desktop or laptop instead.
