More questions →How to Search and Download USGS Satellite and Aerial Imagery with EarthExplorer
EarthExplorer (earthexplorer.usgs.gov) is the U.S. Geological Survey's portal for querying and ordering satellite images, aerial photographs, and cartographic products. You can define an area of interest by address, coordinates, map click, or file upload, set a date range, pick a dataset, and then preview and download or order the results. The workflow below follows the four-step structure the site itself uses: Search Criteria, Data Sets, Additional Criteria, Results.
Step 1: Define your search area
On the Search Criteria tab, choose how you want to specify the area of interest. The available methods are:
- Address or place name — type it into the geocoder field.
- Coordinates — enter them directly.
- Map click — click the map to draw your area.
- File upload — supply a GeoJSON, KML, or Shapefile.
- Feature (GNIS) — search by named geographic feature.
- Path/Row — enter a WRS path and row (see below).
For polygon or point entry, you can set the type. If you use Path/Row, select the WRS type first: WRS2 or WRS1. WRS (Worldwide Reference System) is the grid USGS uses to index Landsat scenes, so Path/Row is the fastest route when you already know which scene you need.
You can also set a date range here to limit results by acquisition date.
Watch the 100-record limit
EarthExplorer caps search results at 100 records. The page states this directly and recommends narrowing your search to avoid exceeding it. To stay under the limit, select a Country, Feature Class, and/or Feature Type. The Feature Type list is long and granular — for example, populated places (city, town, village, settlement), administrative boundaries (borough, county, parish, township), and many natural and cultural features (bay, beach, canal, cape, glacier, and so on). Choosing a specific feature type instead of "All" is the simplest way to cut a large result set down.
Step 2: Select your data sets
Move to the Data Sets tab and choose the collection you want. The portal covers satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and cartographic products, so the right choice depends on your goal:
- Satellite imagery — for example Landsat, which is widely used for land-cover and change studies.
- Aerial photographs — historical and recent airborne coverage.
- Cartographic products — maps and related products.
If you are unsure which collection fits, start broad, run the search, and use the preview in the Results step to judge whether the imagery is suitable before committing to a download or order.
Step 3: Add additional criteria
The Additional Criteria tab lets you filter further. Typical filters include cloud cover and other scene-level attributes. This is where you reduce noise: a low cloud-cover threshold removes scenes that would be unusable for visual interpretation, and geographic filters help you stay within the 100-record cap.
Step 4: Review and retrieve results
The Results tab shows your matches along with a "Total Results Approximated" count and a summary of what you searched:
- the data sets you selected,
- your area of interest,
- the criteria you applied.
Use the preview to confirm image quality and coverage before downloading or submitting an order. If the preview looks wrong — wrong season, too much cloud, off-target footprint — go back and adjust rather than downloading a poor scene.
Common problems and how to fix them
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No results | Area, date range, or dataset too narrow, or mismatched | Widen the date range, switch datasets, or redraw a larger area |
| Too many results / hit the 100-record limit | Area or criteria too broad | Add a Country, Feature Class, or Feature Type; tighten the date range; lower cloud cover |
| Wrong scenes returned | Path/Row or WRS type mismatch | Confirm whether the scene is indexed under WRS2 or WRS1 and re-enter |
| Area not recognized | Uploaded file format or geocoder input issue | Use a supported format (GeoJSON, KML, Shapefile) or switch to map click or coordinates |
Practical notes
- Login and ordering: EarthExplorer has a Login and a Help/Feedback area, and the workflow includes an order step for products that are not immediately downloadable. Treat login requirements and any access conditions as things to confirm on the site rather than assuming a product is open.
- Start narrow, then expand. Because of the 100-record cap, it is usually faster to begin with a specific feature type and date window and loosen only if you get nothing.
- Preview before you commit. The preview step is the cheapest way to avoid downloading scenes that do not actually cover your target.
For help documentation and advanced map tools, use the Help link on the site; the interface notes that advanced map tools are covered there.
What Is the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta and What Can You See There?
The Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame is an interactive museum and fan attraction in Atlanta, GA, dedicated to the players, coaches, and traditions of college football. It's worth a visit if you're a college football fan, traveling with family, or looking for an indoor Atlanta attraction that goes beyond static exhibits. The Hall combines inductee recognition, the sport's history, hands-on experiences, and rotating exhibitions — and it can be bundled with other Atlanta attractions for savings.
What the Hall of Fame Actually Is
It's the official home of the College Football Hall of Fame, operated in partnership with the National Football Foundation. Its stated mission is to "inspire and entertain by celebrating the passion and traditions of college football and its greatest players and coaches."
Two things distinguish it from a typical sports museum:
- It's a hall of fame, not just a museum. Inductees are the centerpiece, with new classes announced annually and honored before their permanent place in the Hall.
- It's built as an attraction, not an archive. The site markets itself as a destination for college football fans and as an Atlanta thing to do, with interactive elements, group experiences, and event space.
What You Can See and Do
Hall of Fame Inductees and History
The core experience is the celebration of college football's greatest players and coaches. The 2026 class was announced on January 14, 2026, during "College Football Live Presented by Great Clips" on ESPN2 — eighteen First Team All-America players and four coaches. They'll be inducted at the 68th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 8, 2026, before entering the Hall in Atlanta.
If you visit around an announcement or induction cycle, expect the inductee content to be a highlight. Quotes from inductees are part of the experience — for example, Tim Tebow (Class of 2023): "None of us are here on our own. We're here because there are so many people that influenced us and inspired us, lead us and encouraged us and picked us up when we were down."
Limited-Time Exhibitions
The Hall hosts rotating exhibitions alongside its permanent content. Currently open is Battle of the Bands, an art exhibition celebrating HBCU marching bands through Keith Duncan's mixed-media works, described as bringing "rhythm, pride and pageantry" to life. It's presented by Southern Company in partnership with Mabra Law and runs through May 2027 — a long window, but still a limited-time feature worth checking before you go.
Interactive and Family-Oriented Content
The site promotes family fun packs and frames the visit as family-friendly, with admission bundles that include Chick-fil-A. Specific interactive stations aren't detailed in the available materials, so treat the "interactive museum" framing as the general expectation rather than a confirmed list of individual exhibits.
Tickets, Discounts, and Ways to Save
| Option | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard tickets | General admission, purchased via the site | Most visitors |
| Family Fun Packs | Admission + Chick-fil-A included, available for a limited time in fall | Families wanting a bundled meal |
| Atlanta CityPASS® | Covers Atlanta's top five attractions including the Hall; site states savings up to 47% | Visitors planning multiple Atlanta attractions |
| VIP Tours | Listed as a separate offering on the site | Visitors wanting a guided experience |
| Group tickets | Group outings and group experiences | Teams, schools, organizations |
CityPASS is delivered as a mobile ticket after one purchase, which the site frames as saving both time and money. If you're already planning to hit several Atlanta attractions, that's the clearest savings path. If you're only visiting the Hall, a standard or family pack ticket makes more sense.
Practical Details
- Location: Atlanta, GA.
- Private events: The Hall is available as a venue for private events; the site directs you to contact them to book.
- Groups: Group tickets and group experiences are offered separately from individual admission.
- Timing note: The Battle of the Bands exhibition runs through May 2027, so it's not an urgent window — but limited-time offerings like the fall Family Fun Packs are seasonal.
Is It Worth It for You?
Go if: you follow college football (especially SEC or ACC programs), you're looking for an indoor Atlanta attraction with family appeal, or you want to combine several Atlanta sights under CityPASS.
Skip or deprioritize if: you have no interest in college football, or you're short on time and only want headline Atlanta attractions — in that case, CityPASS still lets you include it without committing a full day.
The Hall's own framing — "The Destination For College Football" — is accurate to its scope: it's built for people who care about the sport's traditions and its inductees, not for a general sports-history overview.
Website Overview
An established domain and managed infrastructure suggest continuity of operations and may support dependable delivery, although neither guarantees service quality. Several search or sharing settings need attention. Together they may make snippets, preview images or preferred URLs less consistent across platforms.
Domain and Registration
Registered in 1996, this domain has about 30 years of history. That suggests continuity, although ownership and purpose may have changed. The domain uses the common .org extension, which is not an independent safety signal.
DNS and Email
MX records exist, but SPF, DKIM and DMARC were not detected. Protection against domain impersonation may be incomplete. Nameservers are provided by turbify.com, indicating managed DNS hosting. MX records point to the Google Workspace email service. No CNAME was found; the observed records resolve directly to addresses. DNSSEC signatures were not detected, so this additional DNS authenticity protection is not confirmed.
TLS and Certificates
The public key uses EC with 256 bits. The server supplied a complete certificate chain. No organization name is present in the certificate; the available fields are consistent with domain validation. The certificate was issued within the Google Trust Services cloud or CDN ecosystem. The certificate's total validity is about 90 days, consistent with a short renewal cycle.
HTTP and Browser Security
The checked browser-security headers were not detected, leaving fewer explicit browser-side safeguards. No X-Powered-By header was found, reducing one common source of backend fingerprinting information. The cf-ray response header indicates a CDN or caching proxy in the delivery path. No obvious internal addresses or debug information were found in the headers. The Server header identifies cloudflare without an exact version.
Technology Stack Analysis
The public page identifies Google Analytics, Cloudflare without precise versions, leaving fewer clues for version-specific scanning.
Search and Social Sharing
The title has 73 characters and may be truncated in search results. The meta description has 196 characters and may be shortened in search results. No homepage canonical URL was detected. If duplicate URLs exist, consolidation may be less explicit. Open Graph is partially configured; og:type is missing. The observed directives allow indexing and link following.
