India has 6,264 allocated ASNs and 2,958 announced ASNs, with 35,222,528 IPv4 addresses and 24,757,297,422,338 IPv6 /64 blocks, according to the country-level statistics on IPIP.NET. These figures place India among the larger internet markets by ASN count, but with a notable gap between allocated and announced ASNs, and with IPv4 holdings that are modest relative to its population and ASN base.

What the India numbers are

The IPIP.NET country/region table reports two ASN counts and two address totals per country. For India:

"Allocated" refers to ASNs assigned to organizations registered in India. "Announced" refers to ASNs actually visible in the global routing table. The IPv4 and IPv6 columns are the address space associated with those ASNs.

The allocated vs. announced gap

India's announced ASN count is 2,958 against 6,264 allocated — roughly 47% of allocated ASNs are announced. That gap is larger than in several comparable markets. For reference, from the same table:

• United States: 18,855 announced of 32,219 allocated (~59%)
• Brazil: 8,783 announced of 9,157 allocated (~96%)
• China: 5,189 announced of 6,582 allocated (~79%)
• Russian Federation: 5,003 announced of 5,752 allocated (~87%)

A low announced-to-allocated ratio generally means many assigned ASNs are not actively originating routes. This can reflect dormant allocations, ASNs held for future use, organizations that obtained an ASN but route through a provider's ASN instead, or registrations that never reached full deployment. It is a routing-activity signal, not a measure of network quality.

IPv4: modest relative to ASN count

India's 35.2 million IPv4 addresses sit below several countries with fewer ASNs. Germany, with about half India's allocated ASNs (3,253), holds 114 million IPv4 addresses — more than three times India's total. The United Kingdom, with 3,148 allocated ASNs, holds 71 million. Japan, with 1,277 allocated ASNs, holds 161 million.

This reflects historical allocation timing: IPv4 space was distributed heavily before India's internet build-out accelerated, so later entrants received smaller blocks. India's IPv4 total is therefore not proportional to its ASN count or user base.

IPv6: a much larger pool

India's IPv6 figure of roughly 24.76 trillion /64 blocks dwarfs its IPv4 space. A single /64 is the standard IPv6 subnet size, so this count represents an enormous number of possible subnets. The comparison is not apples-to-apples with IPv4 addresses, but it shows India holds substantial IPv6 allocation — comparable in order of magnitude to the United Kingdom (33.3 trillion) and larger than Canada (4.3 trillion) or Australia (20.6 trillion).

How to use these metrics for comparison

When comparing countries on this table, keep the dimensions separate:

1. Allocated ASNs — size of the registered network operator base.
2. Announced ASNs — how many of those are actually routing.
3. IPv4 count — legacy address holdings, shaped by allocation history.
4. IPv6 /64 count — modern address capacity, not directly comparable to IPv4 totals.

A country can rank high on allocated ASNs but low on announced ones (a deployment gap), or high on IPv6 but low on IPv4 (a late-adopter profile). India shows both patterns. Use the announced-to-allocated ratio to gauge routing activity, and treat IPv4 and IPv6 columns as separate capacity measures rather than a single "address size" figure.
