A certified reference material (CRM) is a reference material accompanied by a certificate that states one or more property values, the uncertainty of those values, and a statement of metrological traceability. Labs use CRMs to calibrate instruments, validate methods, and run quality control (QC) checks where the result must be defensible against a known, documented value. • Intended use and any restrictions — what the material is and is not suitable for.

If a certificate omits uncertainty or traceability, treat the material as a reference material, not a CRM, for defensibility purposes.

How labs use a CRM

Calibration

Use a CRM when the calibration itself must be traceable. You measure the CRM under your method conditions and compare the instrument response to the certified value. The uncertainty on the certificate sets the floor on how well you can know your calibration.

Method validation

To validate a method, you need to show it recovers a known value within acceptable limits. A CRM provides that known value. Run it through the full method, then compare your result to the certified value using the certificate's uncertainty to decide whether the difference is acceptable.

Quality control

In routine QC, a CRM is run alongside samples. If the CRM result falls within your control limits (set with the certificate uncertainty in mind), the batch is considered in control. This is how you catch drift, contamination, or calibration problems before reporting sample results.

Matching the CRM matrix to your sample

The most common misuse is using a CRM whose matrix does not match the sample. A CRM certified in water will not necessarily behave like a digested soil or a metal alloy, because matrix effects change the instrument response.

Match on:

• Matrix composition — similar major components to your samples.
• Analyte concentration range — close to the levels you actually measure.
• Chemical form — the same species or oxidation state where it matters.

If no exact match exists, document the difference and treat the result as an estimate rather than a fully traceable measurement.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Ignoring the uncertainty. Comparing your result to the certified value without accounting for uncertainty leads to false pass/fail decisions.
• Using an expired CRM. Past the expiry date, the certified value may no longer be valid.
• Storing it wrong. Incorrect storage can change the material and invalidate the certificate.
• Treating any standard as a CRM. Without a certificate stating value, uncertainty, and traceability, you cannot claim CRM-level confidence.
• Assuming one CRM fits all methods. A CRM is validated for its intended use; using it outside that scope weakens your claim.

Choosing between a CRM and a general standard

Choose a CRM when you must demonstrate accuracy, traceability, or regulatory defensibility — for example, method validation, accreditation, or reporting results that may be challenged. Choose a general analytical standard when you only need to set up an instrument, check response, or do internal, non-defensible work. The decision comes down to whether you need a documented, uncertainty-quantified value or just a known input.
