theatermu.org

Theater Mu is an Asian American theater organization founded in 1992, and its stated mission is to celebrate and empower the Asian American community through theater centered on the Asian American experience. It describes itself as the second largest Asian American theater organization in the country. If you want to know whether to attend a show, subscribe, or donate, the useful questions are what it produces, what it stands for, and how to take part.

Mission and what it says about itself

The organization frames its work in both artistic and civic terms. On its site it states that "Theater Mu creates community; it gives our artists a place to be seen and accepted; it shows our audiences that our voices and experiences matter." It adds that through theater centered on the Asian American experience, Mu is "working on building a more equitable world."

That language points to three things a visitor can expect:

• Community — a space for Asian American artists to be seen and accepted.
• Representation — stories and voices that reflect Asian American experiences.
• Equity — an explicit goal beyond entertainment.

History

The site identifies the organization as THEATER MU EST. 1992. Its self-description as the second largest Asian American theater organization in the country is a claim about scale and longevity rather than a specific season or budget figure.

The site also points to long-running relationships with artists. It highlights the journeys of Nelson Williams, Melody Her, and Houa Moua "from our early years to today," which suggests continuity across decades rather than a single recent period of activity.

What Theater Mu produces

The site's current listings show a mix of formats rather than one narrow genre:

Two observations follow from this. First, Mu's programming includes work beyond a single mainstage play — co-presented music/taiko performance, a seasonal show, and a literary event. Second, the book launch tied to Exit, Miss Saigon shows the organization engaging with the history and criticism of Asian American representation on stage, not only with new productions.

How to get involved

The site organizes participation into a few clear paths:

• See a show — current listings and "MORE INFO" links lead to individual event details.
• Subscribe — there is a dedicated subscriber page at theatermu.org/subscribe under "For Subscribers." The site does not publish pricing or seating details on the pages reviewed here, so check that page for current terms.
• Contact the box office — the site directs ticket, pricing, seating, and venue questions to the box office.
• Donate — "Support Mu Today" states that "big or small, your donation helps move AAPI theater forward."
• Learn more — the "About Mu" section is described as "stories from the heart of the Asian American experience."

How to decide whether to engage

Use these conditions rather than a general recommendation:

• Attend or subscribe if you want theater built around Asian American experience and are open to a season that mixes plays, co-presented performances, and literary events.
• Donate if the stated goal — moving AAPI theater forward and building a more equitable world — matches what you want to fund. The site does not state donation amounts or tiers on the pages reviewed.
• Follow the board and artist stories if you care about organizational governance and long-term artist relationships, since the site publishes both board updates and multi-decade artist journeys.
• Check the box office first for anything involving tickets, pricing, seating, or venues, since those details are routed there rather than published in the overview.

For a fuller picture, start with the About Mu section for history and artist stories, then the subscribe page for current programming terms.

The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park is a nonprofit organization that raises money and builds community partnerships to support arts, culture, and recreation in Overland Park, Kansas. If you live in or near the city, its work shows up in places you may already visit: Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, and public art projects across the community. The foundation itself is not a city department; it works alongside the city and donors to fund enhancements, programs, and special projects that go beyond what tax dollars alone cover.

What the Foundation Actually Does

Think of the foundation as a charitable partner for Overland Park's cultural and recreational assets. Its role generally includes:

• Fundraising: Accepting donations and gifts that are directed toward specific attractions, programs, or public art.
• Community partnerships: Working with businesses, civic groups, and residents who want to support local amenities.
• Events: Hosting or supporting events that both raise funds and give the community a reason to gather.
• Project support: Helping pay for improvements, additions, and experiences at the destinations it serves.

Because it is a nonprofit, money raised goes back into the community rather than to private owners. That structure is what allows residents and local businesses to contribute directly to the places they care about.

The Destinations and Initiatives It Supports

Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead

Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is a family-oriented attraction that gives children and adults a hands-on look at farm life, animals, and Kansas history. Foundation support for the Farmstead typically means helping fund enhancements, educational experiences, and community events that keep the site engaging for repeat visitors and first-timers alike.

Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

The Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a living collection of gardens, trails, and natural areas. Supporting it can involve funding plantings, garden features, educational programming, and long-term care that keeps the grounds beautiful and accessible through the seasons.

Public Art Projects

Public art is another core focus. The foundation helps bring sculptures, installations, and other artistic works into shared spaces, making art part of everyday life rather than something you only see in a museum. These projects often depend on donations and partnerships to move from idea to installation.

How Community Partnerships and Events Fit In

The foundation's model relies on the community, not just on institutional funding. Local businesses may sponsor an event or a project. Residents may attend a fundraiser, buy a ticket, or make a donation. Civic organizations may partner on a specific initiative.

Events serve two purposes at once: they raise money and they build awareness. A well-attended event introduces new people to the Farmstead, the Arboretum, or a public art effort, and some of those people become ongoing supporters. Over time, this cycle of participation and giving is what sustains projects that a city budget alone might not fully fund.

Practical Ways Residents Can Get Involved

If you want to support this work, you do not need to be a major donor. Here are realistic starting points:

1. Visit the attractions. Attendance and word-of-mouth support matter. Spend a day at the Farmstead or the Arboretum and bring friends or family.
2. Attend a foundation event. Events are the easiest entry point. You get an experience, and your ticket or participation helps fund projects.
3. Donate. Contributions can often be directed toward a specific area, such as the Farmstead, the Arboretum, or public art. Check the foundation's website for current giving options.
4. Volunteer. Nonprofits frequently need help with events, outreach, and administrative tasks. Volunteering is a low-cost way to contribute time and skills.
5. Partner as a business. If you own or manage a local business, sponsorship or in-kind support can align your brand with community assets people genuinely value.
6. Spread the word. Sharing events and projects with neighbors, school groups, or community boards helps the foundation reach people who might want to help.

For current details on events, donation methods, and volunteer needs, go directly to the foundation's website, since programs and opportunities change over time.

Why This Matters for Local Quality of Life

Arts, culture, and recreation are not extras. They shape how a city feels to live in. A children's farmstead gives families a shared destination. Botanical gardens provide green space and seasonal beauty. Public art makes ordinary streets and parks more interesting. When residents and businesses invest in these things through a foundation, they are effectively choosing the kind of community they want.

The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park exists to make that choice easier and more organized. It connects people who care about these places with the projects that need support, and it keeps the benefits local.

A Simple Way to Think About It

If you are trying to understand the foundation in one sentence: it is the community's fundraising and partnership arm for Overland Park's arts, culture, and recreation, with a focus on Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, and public art. You benefit from its work when you visit these places, and you can contribute by attending, donating, volunteering, or partnering. Start with a visit, then decide how you want to take part.

Theater Mu is an Asian American theater organization founded in 1992, and according to its own site it is the second largest Asian American theater organization in the country. It produces theater centered on the Asian American experience, and its stated purpose is to create community, give artists a place to be seen and accepted, and show audiences that Asian American voices and experiences matter. If you are looking for a company to follow, subscribe to, or support, that identity is the main thing to know going in.

What Theater Mu does

The organization describes itself as "moving Asian American theater forward" and frames its work as building a more equitable world through theater centered on the Asian American experience. Its site organizes that work into a few clear areas:

• Productions — current and upcoming shows, with links for more information and booking.
• Community and artist stories — profiles of artists and their journeys with Mu, including pieces tracing people's involvement from the early years to today.
• Organizational information — board of directors, history, and background on the company.
• Support — donations of any size, described as helping move AAPI theater forward.

Who it is for

The site speaks to three overlapping audiences:

1. Audiences who want to see theater rooted in Asian American experience.
2. Artists looking for a company where, in Mu's words, they can be seen and accepted.
3. Supporters who want to fund AAPI theater through donations or subscriptions.

What you can do on the site

The homepage and its links point to several concrete actions:

The site also surfaces specific programming and events — for example, Swingposium (produced by San Jose Taiko and co-presented with TaikoArts Midwest, Oct 16–18), Kung Fu Zombies vs Southeast Asian Girl Scouts (opening on Halloween), and a book launch party celebrating Exit, Miss Saigon with author David Mura and Josephine Lee.

Practical notes

• Pricing and subscription terms are not stated on the homepage. The site links to a subscribe page, but the details — cost, benefits, commitment — aren't in the material here, so check that page directly before deciding.
• Ticket questions about pricing, seating, and venues are routed to the box office rather than answered on the homepage.
• The copyright line reads "Theater Mu Est. 1992 ©2019," so some page content may be older than it appears; confirm current dates on individual event pages.

If your interest is Asian American theater specifically, Theater Mu is one of the larger organizations working in that space, and the fastest way to judge it is to look at what's currently playing and what a subscription actually includes.

Theater Mu produces theater centered on the Asian American experience, and its website highlights a mix of mainstage productions, co-presented performances, and community events. Based on the current site content, recent and upcoming programming includes Swingposium (produced by San Jose Taiko and co-presented with TaikoArtsMidwest), Kung Fu Zombies vs Southeast Asian Girl Scouts (opening on Halloween), and a book launch party celebrating Exit, Miss Saigon with author David Mura and Josephine Lee. If you want to know what's playing right now or what's coming next, the site's event listings and "More Info" links are the place to check.

What kinds of programming Theater Mu offers

The organization's output isn't limited to one type of event. The site points to at least three categories:

• Mainstage and seasonal productions — Full theatrical runs, such as Kung Fu Zombies vs Southeast Asian Girl Scouts, which the site notes opens on Halloween.
• Co-presented and partner performances — Swingposium, for example, is produced by San Jose Taiko and co-presented with TaikoArtsMidwest, meaning Theater Mu is one part of a larger collaboration rather than the sole producer.
• Community and literary events — The book launch party for Exit, Miss Saigon, featuring author David Mura and Josephine Lee, shows that Mu also hosts events tied to Asian American writing and cultural conversation.

This mix matters if you're deciding whether to follow the organization: you're not only getting stage plays, but also talks, launches, and cross-company performances.

How to find current and upcoming shows

The homepage surfaces a few events with "More Info" links, but it doesn't function as a full calendar on its own. To get details on dates, venues, and tickets:

1. Start at the event or production listing referenced on the homepage.
2. Follow the "More Info" link for the specific show you're interested in.
3. For ticketing, seating, and venue questions, the site directs visitors to its Box Office section.

The Box Office page is described as the contact point for "questions about tickets, pricing, seating, and venues" — so that's where you'd confirm whether a show is currently on sale and what it costs.

What to know before you plan

A few practical points from the site:

• Pricing and subscription details aren't spelled out on the homepage. There is a "For Subscribers" link, which suggests a subscription option exists, but specific prices aren't shown in the available content. Check the subscribe page or Box Office for actual figures.
• Some events are one-night or limited-run. The book launch party and the Halloween opening suggest specific dates rather than ongoing runs, so timing matters.
• Collaborations mean multiple organizations are involved. If you're looking for a Taiko performance versus a Theater Mu play, the co-presented format means you may want to check both companies' listings.

Why this programming is notable

Theater Mu describes itself as the second largest Asian American theater organization in the country and frames its work as building community and a more equitable world through theater centered on Asian American experience. The range of events — from a Taiko collaboration to a Miss Saigon–related book launch — reflects that mission in practice: it's not just producing plays, but connecting theater to broader Asian American cultural conversations.

If your goal is to decide whether to attend or follow Theater Mu, the answer depends on what you're looking for. For staged productions, watch the seasonal listings and Box Office. For cultural and literary events, keep an eye on the community programming. Either way, the site's "More Info" links and Box Office section are the fastest route to confirmed dates and tickets.

Theater Mu's website provides a dedicated Box Office entry point for questions about tickets, pricing, seating, and venues. If you have a specific question before buying tickets—or need help with an existing order—start there. The site does not publish a phone number or email address in the material available here, so the Box Office page is the intended first stop for further guidance.

What the Box Office Handles

According to Theater Mu's site, the Box Office is the right contact for:

• Tickets — availability, ordering questions, and general ticket inquiries
• Pricing — ticket prices and any pricing-related questions
• Seating — seat locations and seating questions
• Venues — questions about where performances take place

If your question falls outside these areas—such as donations, auditions, or press—use the corresponding section of the site instead (for example, the donation page for giving, or the "About Mu" section for organizational history).

How to Reach the Box Office

1. Go to theatermu.org.
2. Look for the Box Office section on the homepage. The site labels it with a "MORE INFO" link, which leads to the box office details.
3. Follow that link to find the contact method or further instructions for reaching the box office.

The site does not list a direct phone number or email in the available page content, so the Box Office page itself is where the current contact details live. If the link leads to a form or a separate ticketing platform, use that channel for your specific question.

What to Have Ready Before You Contact Them

To get a faster answer, gather the following before you reach out:

• The show or event name you're asking about (for example, a specific production)
• Performance date and time you're considering or have booked
• Your order or confirmation number, if you already purchased tickets
• The specific question — pricing tier, accessible seating, venue location, exchange policy, etc.

This helps the box office route your question correctly, especially for seating and venue inquiries that depend on the specific production.

If You Can't Find the Box Office Link

If the Box Office entry isn't obvious on the homepage:

• Check the site's main navigation or footer for a "Box Office," "Tickets," or "Contact" link.
• Look at the page for the specific show you're interested in—ticketing details are often repeated there.
• Note that Theater Mu's site content references subscriber information at theatermu.org/subscribe, which is a separate path from general box office questions. Subscribers may find account-related answers there.

Quick Reference

The key takeaway: Theater Mu directs ticket, price, seating, and venue questions to its Box Office entry point on the website. Start there, and have your show details and order information ready so you can get a specific answer rather than a general one.
